U budizmu, tri karakteristike bića su nepostojanost (aniccā), nesopstvo (anattā) i patnja (duḥkha).[1][2]
Patnja nastaje tako što ljudi podležu zabludi, verujući da su tvorevine postojane, odnosno da imaju suštinu.
