Od čitavog njenog opsežnog, ali često nedovoljno oblikovanog stvaralaštva, održali su se u književnosti "Krik djece", patetični protest protiv eksploatacije dječjeg rada u tvornicama, i ciklus soneta "Soneti s portugalskog", poetski dokaz njene ljubavi prema suprugu, pjesniku R. Browningu, a ubraja se među najbolje ljubavne pjesme u engleskoj književnosti. U spjevovima "Prozori palače Guidi" i "Pjesme Kongrsu" inspirirala se borbama za oslobođenje Italije, a djelo "Aurora Leigh" je odraz političkih i društvenih prlika u viktorijanskoj Engleskoj. Njezino djelo karakteriše dubina osjećaja, ljubav prema Italiji i obilje autobiografskih elemenata.

Barrett Browning je tokom najveći dio života bila pogođena nikad precizno dijagosticiranom bolešću, zbog koje je rijetko izlazila iz kuće. Usprkos tome, započela je ljubavnu vezu sa šest godina mlađim pjesnikom Robertom Browningom za koga se, usprkos žestokog protivljenja porodice, udala i rodila mu sina. Njen život je 1930. godine postao predmet popularne kazališne predstave The Barretts of Wimpole Street Rudolfa Besiera, u kojoj je njen lik tumačila Katharine Cornell. Ista je predstava četiri godine kasnije adaptirana u nagrađivani film.
