Ovaj enzim izolovan iz bakterije Hlorobium tepidum katalizuje finalni korak de novo sinteze tetrahidrobiopterina iz GTP-a, cf. EC 1.1.1.153, sepiapterinska reduktaza (formira L-eritro-7,8-dihidrobiopterin).
