Serbian composer

Trifunovic Vitomir-Voja was born 1916 in Bukovica near Kraljevo, Jugoslavia. Graduated from composition department at the Belgrade Music Academy. His professors were the distinguished pedagogues and composers such as Stanojlo Rajicic, Josip Slavenski and Milenko Zivkovic. After graduation he devoted some time to the pedegogic work and founded “Dr. Vojislav Vuckovic” music school and became its first principal. Since 1959 he has continually been editor for the “New Music” and Music Advisor at Radio Belgrade.

In the course of his long creative activity Trifunovic went through several creative phases, improving his creative music style as well as his comprehension of music in general. His development has been clearly divided into three periods

The first period is is marked by clear and functional harmonic style organized in compact form, very often based on the common sonata or song forms. In the works created at that time the composer made use of his great knowledge of the Yugoslav nations’ folklore of which he was an exellent performer in his youth. During this period he wrote:

Pastorale for Flute and Harp (piano), A Small Suite for Piano, Variations for Piano, Sonata for Violin and Piano,The First String Quartet, Lamentoso for String Orchestra, “Sumadija” - Orchestral Suite, Heroic Overture.

The works in the second period are characterized by a multitude of the new and unusual composing solutions. This is a mature period of the composer’s work in which he searches new forms for his music ideas. The works from this period such as Symphonic Picture - inspired by the tragic earthquake in Skopje, Toccata for Orchestra, although composed in classical forms, show composer’s attempts to abandon the traditional forms and make creative concepts.

The first clearer traces of Trifunovic’s new ideas are noticable in his symphonic work “Synthesis 4” which actually initiated the composer’s third period devoted, in the first place to the sarch for the new ways in the contemporary music. “Synthesis 4” is the first work in which the author definitely neglects classic forms, tonal cohesion and standard compositional-tehnical instrumental solutions. Cantata “The Views”created immediately after “Synthesis 4” by its musical style presents a completely new approach to larger vocal - instrumental works.

In his further work, Trifunovic is deepening his comprehansion of music. His inspirations are not any longer neoromantic and are gradually approaching his original concept. But the composer is not making use of the fashionable elements, on contrary, even in his most liberal treatments he remains loyal to his own concepts, to the need for the contents and message of music. His orchestral works “Antinomy” and “Associations” are the best examples of his concepts.

In one of his most important work, written so far, “Concert for Violin and Orchestra”, Trifunovic used his excellent knowledge of classical forms and other composing - tehnical disciplines which he used in the inversive way thus giving new solutions for both the soloist and the orchestra. This was composer’s answer to dogmatism and formal avangardism. In his works “The Impulses” for solo double bass and orchestra, and “Epigram” for solo double bass, Trifunovic discovered new possibilities for this instrument.

Compositions from the third and the most creative period of Trifunovic’s work present his music poetics in an original way and show that he has remained faithful to his own concepts, to the needs of the music contents, message and communication.

Beside the above mentioned works, at the beginning of the third period he also created the following compositions: “Integrals” for string orchestra, “The First Symphony - Face of the time (1941-1945), “Music Concertante for The Orchestra”, Overture “Magnifico”, “The Music Spheres for Soprano and 9 Players”, “The Second Symphony” dedicated to his friend and conductor Vanco Cavdarski, “The Symphonic Piece”, “Concert for Double Bass and Orchestra”, “The Third Symphony” in memory of Dmitri Shostakovic, Ballet “The Maiden of Kosovo” - the top of the composer’s work, Concert for Piano and Orchestra, Kosovo Legends, The October 1941 in Kraljevo - Symp. Poem a kind of “musical monument” dedicated to the victims of Kraljevo execution in 1941.

The works of Vitomir Trifunovic have been performed at the international festivals of contemporary music such as: Warshaw Autumn, Zagreb Bienal and others, and in the concert halls of many countries in Europe, America and Australia. His music has been used for the ballet performances in Europe and America.

The composer has been awarded many sigificant prizes and received numerous recognitions for his work.

He was engaged in a number of cultural institutions and artistic assotiations. Vitomir Trifunovic passed away at January 20th 2007.
