Rodio se kao sin uglednog i uticajnog anglo-normanskog plemića [[Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester|Roberta de Beaumonta, 1. earla Leicestera]] i francuske plemkinje [[Elizabeth of Vermandois, grofica Leicestera|Elizabeth od Vermandoisa]]. Zajedno s njim je kao [[blizanci|blizanac]] rođen [[Waleran de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Worcester|Waleran de Beaumont]]. Nakon očeve smrti u junu 1118. je oba brata na svoj dvor primio kralj [[Henry I od Engleske]]; Robert je naslijedio posjede u Engleskoj, a Waleran posjede u Francuskoj. Robert, za razliku od brata, nije sudjelovao u pobuni protiv Henryja i sve je vrijeme ostao na dvoru.
