Neki egiptolozi ga, pak, smatraju jednim od brojnih sinova [[Ramzes II|Ramzesa II]]. Vrlo malo se zna o ovom kralju, koji je Egiptom vladao samo tri do četiri godine. Amenmessea većina egiptologa smatra uzurpatorom koji je nakon Merneptahove smrti ili preoteo prijestolje od zakonitog nasljednika [[Seti II|Setija II]] ili je, koristeći zauzetost faraona, ustankom osvojio vlast u [[Teba (Egipat)|Tebi]]. Nakon nekoliko godina je Seti II uspio doći na vlast, odnosno povratiti kontrolu nad Gornjim Egiptom, te su manje-više sve slike ili statue uzurpatora Amenmessea uništeni.
