Dear Sir/Madam,

We are writing to you on behalf of the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia community (https://sh.wikipedia.org) with the request to have the Google search engines pertaining to Croatia (Google.hr) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Google.ba) include search results from the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia among the top search results, along with those from the Croatian and English Wikipedias, which now seem to appear as the only results originating from any of the Wikipedias on these two Google search engines.

Our request has been prompted by the following reasons:

  • The Serbo-Croatian language is a South-Slavic language comprising some 19 million native speakers and the primary language of the populations of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbo-Croatian).
  • With more than 270.000 articles, the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia exceeds, in the number of articles, any single Wikipedia written in a specific standard variant of the language, i.e. the Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian Wikipedias. Furthermore, Serbo-Croatian Wiktionary contains 850.000 articles, while wiktionaries in three standard variants, taken together, contain 49.000 articles.
  • The Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia articles are written in all the standard variants and include many in the Croatian and Bosnian variants.
  • As its users are native speakers of all four standard variants, so should the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia be made equally visible in all the countries where Serbo-Croatian is spoken, i.e. Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
  • Last but not least, the Google search engines pertaining to Serbia (Google.sr) and Montenegro (Google.me) already display results from the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, along with those from the Serbian, English and Croatian ones.

We have received many notices of disappointment, from among the users of social networks, with the fact that the Google search engines in Croatia (Google.hr) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Google.ba) do not include the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia in its search results. This renders it difficult for users to find the information they are looking for, particularly taking into account that, with its 270.000 articles, the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia has, for instance, twice as many articles as the Croatian Wikipedia.

If the Google search engine pertaining to Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina start displaying results from the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, along with those from the Croatian Wikipedia, this problem will be solved.

Hoping that you will take our request into consideration, we remain,

Yours sincerely,

sh.wikipedia.org
