Ovaj enzim katalizuje četvoroelektronsku redukciju biliverdina IX alfa (dvoelektronsku redukciju na oba prstena: A i D). Reakcija teče putem 2-elektronskog intermedijera, 181,182-dihidrobiliverdina. Flavodoksini mogu da koriste feredoksin.
