My position in a college closely connected with the Boardof Foreign Affairs gave me exceptional opportunities for ob-serving the course of diplomacy in the Chinese capital fornearly thirty years. Yet my object is not so much to WTite ahistory of events as to exhibit the Chinese as I have seenthem, in their social and political life.
