Craig je rođen 1949. u Peoriji, kao drugo od troje djece Malloryja i Doris Craig. Njegov otac radio je za željezničku kompaniju T. P. & W. i zajedno s porodicom privremeno se preselio u Keokuk u Iowi, a u rodni Illinois odnosno East Peoriju vratili su se 1960. godine. Craig je od 1963. do 1967. pohađao srednju školu u East Peoriji gdje se istaknuo u javnim debatama i osvojio državno prvenstvo u oratorstvu. Iako je odrastao u ireligioznoj porodici, u septembru 1965. preobratio se na kršćanstvo (evangelizam) i dvije godine kasnije upisao se na protestantski Koledž Wheaton u Wheatonu gdje je 1971. stekao titulu prvostupnika. Godinu kasnije oženio se s Jan koju je upoznao u kršćanskoj organizaciji Cru. Craig potom 1973. upisuje studij filozofije religije na Trinityju, evangeličkom bogoslovnom sjemeništu u Deerfieldu (sjeverno od Chicaga), gdje mu je jedan od profesora bio filozof i teolog Norman Geisler. Nakon magistriranja 1975. Craig odlazi u Englesku i upisuje postdiplomski studij filozofije na Univerzitetu u Birminghamu, te dvije godine kasnije stječe doktorat pod mentorstvom Johna Hicka. Na temelju istog 1979. objavio je The Kalām Cosmological Argument, svoju prvu knjigu u kojoj se obrađuje kalamski kozmološki argument. Godine 1978. njemačka Zaklada Alexander von Humboldt nagrađuje ga postdoktorskim usavršavanjem s ciljem promicanja istraživanja Isusove historičnosti i uskrsnuća, te Craig odlazi na Univerzitet Ludwig Maximilian u Münchenu gdje mu predaje Wolfhart Pannenberg. Svoj drugi doktorat, na temu teologije, obranio je 1984. godine. Akademsku karijeru Craig je ostvario kao profesor na Sjemeništu Talbot pri Univerzitetu Biola u La Miradi, Baptističkom univerzitetu u Houstonu, Katoličkom univerzitetu u Louvainu, te na Trinityju u Deerfieldu. Objavio je više od 40 monografija na temu filozofije religije, prirodne teologije, filozofije vremena, sistematske teologije, te odnosa religije i nauke. Kao vrstan polemičar sudjelovao je u brojnim javnim debatama na temu filozofije, teologije i religije.
