Diarmait mac Cerbaill

Diarmait mac Cerbaill (? - cca. 565) bio je kralj Tare ili, prema tradicionalnom tumačenju, veliki kralj Irske. Srednjovjekovna tradicija ga naziva posljednjim paganskim kraljem koji je izvodio rituale ban-feisa ili vjenčanja sa boginjom zemlje. Iako je predmet brojnih legendi nastalih u srednjem vijeku, smatra ga se historijskom ličnošću, čiji su potomci imali značajan uticaj na događaje u Irskoj u kasnijim vijekovima.

Genealoški izvori ga navode kao sina Fergusa Cerbella, čiji je otac Conall Cremthainne bio sin Nialla od Devet talaca; na temelju toga je Diarmat pripadao klanu Uí Néill. Na prijestolje je došao naslijedivši Tuathala Maelgarba. Bio je suvremenik Svetog Kolumbe, protiv koga je oko 560. presudio u sporu koji svetac imao sa redovnikom Finnianom iz Movillea; Kolumba, koji je tajno prepisao Finnianov tekst, morao je kopiju predati Finnianu. Kada je Kolumba to odbio učiniti, došlo je do bitke u kojoj je Diarmait poražen. Kasnije ga je ubio Áed Dub mac Suibni, kralj Cruthina u današnjem Ulsteru.

Dio historičara vjeruje da je sa Diarmaitovom smrću na duže vrijeme nestala institucija kralja Tare, odnosno velikog kralja, te da je obnovljena tek u 7. vijeku sa Domnall mac Áedom. Tradicionalni popisi kraljeva, pak, kao nasljednike navode Forggus mac Muirchertaiga i Domnalla Ilchelgacha.
