Dahui uveo običaj koncentracije na Hua Tou ("riječ-glava") kung-an (koan). Taj metod se ztvao "intrspekcija Ch'an kung-ana (koan) introspection" (k'an-hua ch'an).[2] Iako je vjerovao da su koani najbolji način da se postigne prosvjetljenje, priznavao je i vrijednost učenjima Konfucija i Lao-tzua.

Dahui je bio žestoki kritičar "heretičkog Ch'ana tihe iluminacije" (mo-chao hsieh-ch'an) Caodonga (Wade-Giles: Ts'ao-tung; japanski: škola Sōtō).
