U najužem smislu izraz bojni brod se koristi za kapitalne brodove koji su se razvili u drugoj polovici [[19. vijek]]a. Kod njih se razlikuju:

* [[drednoti]], koji su ime dobili po britanskom broud ''[[HMS Dreadnought]]'' iz [[1906]]. godine;
