Praizvedena je godine 472. pne. i predstavlja najstariji sačuvan tekst u [[historija teatra|historiji teatra]]. U njoj je dramatiziran [[Ahemenidsko Carstvo|perzijska]] reakcija na vijesti o poratu njihove flote i vojske u [[bitka kod Salamine|bitci kod Salamine]] (480. pne.), odlučujućem okršaju [[Grčko-perzijski ratovi|grčko-perzijskih ratova]]; kao takva, ističe se i po tome što jedina sačuvana grčka tragedija koja se bavi suvremenim događajima.
