Kemijsko ratovanje se razlikuje od upotrebe [[konvencionalno oružje|konvencionalnog]] ili [[nuklearno oružje|nuklearnog oružja] jer destruktivni efekti kemijskog oružja nisu primarni rezultat [[eksplozija|eksplozivne]] snage. Ofenzivno korištenje živih [[organizam]]a (kao što je [[antraks]]) se smatraju [[biološko ratovanje|biološkim ratovanjem]] umjesto kemisjkog ratovanja; korištenje neživih toksičnih tvari proizvedenih od živih organizama (npr. [[toksin]]a kao što je [[botulinski toksin]], [[ricin]] ili [[saksitoksin]]) ''se'' smatra kemijskim ratovanjem po odredbama [[Konvencija o kemijskom oružju|Konvencije o kemijskom oružju]]. Po ovoj Konvenciji, svaka toksična kemikalija, bez obzira na porijekllo, se smatra kemijskim oružjem osim ako se koristi za svrhe nisu izričito zabranjene.
