Zvijezde su najrasprostranjenija nebeska tijela u Svemiru. To su užarena plinovita tijela slična [[Sunce|Suncu]] ([http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/sun.jpg sl.1]). Golim okom možemo vidjeti oko 5000 zvijezda a teleskopom stotine milijardi. Udaljenosti među zvijezdama su ogromne i mjere se svjetlosnim godinama (SG). Svjetlosna godina je put dug oko 9,46 biliona kilometara što ga pređe svjetlost za godinu krećući se brzinom od 299 792 458 m/s.Sunce je [[Zemlja|Zemlji]] ([http://www.astro.washington.edu/weblinks/Earth/earth.gif sl.2]) najbliža zvijezda koja se nalazi na udaljenosti od 149 600 000 km ili 8,3 svjetlosne sekunde (sm). Osim Sunca, najbliža je [[Proksima Kentaura]] (Proxima Centauri ili Alpha Centauri C, [http://www.ipac.caltech.edu/2mass/gallery/proxima_cen.jpg sl.3]) koja je udaljena oko 4,3 SG. Zvijezde se međusobno razlikuju po veličini, boji i sjaju. Najsjajnija zvijezda u [[sazviježđe|sazviježđu]] Orion je [[Betelgez]] (Betelgeuze ili Alpha Orionis, [http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap990605.html sl.4]),a [[Antares]] (Alpha Scorpii, [http://hw.sakura.ne.jp/~yumi/space/star/k_image/st-ant.jpg sl.5]) u sazviježđu §korpion.
