Dana [[20.2.]] [[2005]]. Thompson je izvršio samoubistvo ispalivši metak iz pištolja u glavu. U svom oproštajnom pismu je naveo kao razlog naveo starost i "nedostatak zabave". 20.8. 2005. je Thompsonov pepeo, u skladu s njegovim željama, ispaljen s topa na vrhu 50 m visokog tornja koga je samog dao dizajnirati.
