Karen Armstrong

Karen Andersen Armstrong (Wildmoor, 14. 11. 1944. – ), engleska autorica knjiga na temu komparativne religije i međureligijskog dijaloga, široko priznata kao jedan od vodećih komentatora tih disciplina u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu.

Biografija

Armstrong je rođena 1944. u engleskom naselju Wildmoor, u katoličkoj porodici irskog porijekla koja se nakon njenog rođenja preselila prvo u Bromsgrove, a zatim u Birmingham. Sa 17 godina ušla je u redovničku službu, no napustila ju je sedam godina kasnije za vrijeme studija engleske književnosti na Univerzitetu u Oxfordu. Akademsku karijeru započela je predavajući književnost na Univerzitetu u Londonu, a kasnije je predavala i na rabinskom Koledžu Leo Baeck. Tokom 1980-ih objavila je niz knjiga o kršćanstvu, dok od 1990-ih piše i o islamu, judaizmu i drugim religijama. Na njen opus snažan utjecaj imali su protestantski akademik Wilfred Cantwell Smith i katolički filozof Bernard Lonergan. Armstrong je dobitnica višestrukih nagrada i priznanja, uključujući počasne doktorate s Univerziteta Aston (2006), St Andrews (2011) i McGill (2014). Godine 2015. odlikovana je i Redom Britanskog Carstva (OBE).
